Alexa+ early access just launched in Japan. But what’s it actually like to use?
Here’s the thing: in the US, Alexa+ has been available to everyone since February 2026. So I went through what tech media have reported from users there, and what it could mean for those of us in Japan.
💡 Quick answer
・Users like the natural conversation and smart home control
・Common complaints: slow responses, features that used to work, and broken routines
・In the US, some Prime members were switched to Alexa+ automatically, and not everyone was happy
・In Japan, you sign up yourself, and you can switch back anytime
1. How Alexa+ rolled out overseas
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| By June 2025 | Over 1 million people in the US had access (early access) |
| January 2026 | Some US Prime members were automatically switched to Alexa+ |
| February 2026 | Alexa+ became available to everyone in the US |
| March 2026 | Early access launched in the UK (the first country outside North America) |
| October 29, 2026 | Early access launched in Japan |
According to Amazon, tens of millions signed up for US early access, and people interact with Alexa+ more than twice as much as with the original Alexa.
2. What users like
Here’s how TechRadar summed up user feedback:
- Better conversation and search: clearer answers to questions
- Handy smart home control: chain several requests together, and set up automations in plain language
- A kitchen helper: ask follow-ups like “how much flour again?” while working through a recipe
- Someone to bounce ideas off: meal plans, travel itineraries, kids’ homework
The TechRadar writer who tested it was “mostly impressed” overall.
3. What users complain about
On the flip side, forums like Reddit are full of complaints like these:
- Slow responses
- Things that used to work don’t: smart lights not connecting, for example
- Routines stopped working
- Inaccurate answers sometimes
- Too chatty, or a speaking style people don’t love
- Too many ads
💡 TechRadar also notes that Reddit doesn’t represent every user. Complaints tend to be louder online.
4. The US “auto-upgrade” backlash
In January 2026, Amazon automatically switched some US Prime members to Alexa+. The notice said it would take “just a few minutes” and need no action, and there was no way to opt out in advance.
Some people weren’t happy about it. In English, saying “Alexa, exit Alexa+” switches you back.
💡 Japan works differently: you sign up for a notification and start when your invite arrives (as of October 29, 2026). To turn it off, say アレクサ、早期アクセスを終了して (Arekusa, sōki akusesu o shūryō shite). More in my Alexa+ Japan launch guide.
5. 3 things to do before you start in Japan
Based on what US users ran into, these are worth doing first:
- Screenshot your routines in the Alexa app, so you can rebuild them if something breaks
- List the features you use most: morning alarms, radiko, smart devices. Check those first after switching
- Tell your family: turning it on or off on one Echo switches every Echo on your account
💡 Remember: these complaints are about the US English version. The Japanese version may behave differently.
One more thing for English speakers: Alexa+ in Japan is Japanese only, so your Echo needs to be set to Japanese.
6. I’ll be testing it myself
I’ve timed how fast my Echo Dots respond before (about 1.1 to 1.2 seconds on both the 5th and 3rd gen). Details are in my Echo Dot response-time test.
When my Alexa+ invite arrives, I’ll time it again the same way to see whether the “it’s slower” complaints hold up in Japanese. I’ll also check whether my routines and radiko still work.

7. Summary
| Point | What overseas users say |
|---|---|
| The good | Natural conversation, handy smart home control, useful for cooking and planning |
| The not-so-good | Slow responses, some old features missing, broken routines |
| How Japan differs | You sign up yourself, and can switch back anytime. Japanese only |
